Few months ago I bought a branded Chineese Android Tablet PC from India. The tablet model is Pipo Max M8 Pro. It is a 9.4 inch Android 4.2 device priced very reasonably. I bought it for around ₹18000.
The purpose?
I desperately wanted a 10" Tablet PC for various things like entertainment, learning and development. But didn't want to shell out more than 20K for a gadget which I was not sure would be used frequently by me. Apple iPad was not at all in my list. I started looking at various Android Tablets. The best ones were Galaxy Note 10, Asus EeePad, Galaxy Nexus 10 etc. but almost all the good 10" tablets were priced more than 25k. There were tablets in sub 15k range by Karbonn, Micromax, iBall and Spice, but these products had low specs and most important, poor after sales service. All these devices are basically re-branded Chinese device only. So, I started my research on getting a high spec Tablet PC directly from China.
Research on Chinese Tablets.
My Research started with gizchina.com . GizChina posts all the news about phones and tablet devices from China. They have discount coupons for many Chinese online stores. Basically you can get everything about Chinese devices on GizChina.
I found few online sites like Orientdeal, SPEmall, and bangood, where you can buy devices with heavy discounts and they ship to India too.
Some of the device I listed out which had very good specs , reviews and not so costly are as following
After the research of specs and stores, I thought of checking the reviews of these Chinese online stores. I was horrified to see huge number unsatisfied customers from various counties. Even though gizchina has store directory which has reviews for all these stores and most of them are good. But if you pick any of the online store website and try Google about it's ratings, you'll surely be shocked.
Then I put my efforts to get any of these tablets from an Indian online store. Luckily I found one of seller on ebay.in which had listed most of the Chinese tablets and phones. The seller is tab-laptop-pc on ebay.in. This seller regularly lists latest devices from chinese market. They have their online store website as well called dealsononline.com
I finally decided to buy the WiFi only version of Pipo Max M8 Pro from the seller on ebay. I choose ebay because PaisaPay protection. The device was listed at ₹18.5K. Order delivered quickly within 4 days from Kolkata to Bangalore.
Trouble with the tablet and Solution
After receiving the tablet I used it for a while and left it without charging during night. When I checked in morning, it was fully discharged and didn't boot up at all. I tried pressing reset button, pressing power button for long durations, but no use. I searched online and found out that there is a major issue with these kind of devices with bulky battery. You should never fully discharge a device with huge battery. It might take longer to charge fully. In my case didn't start even after charging for 20-30 hrs.
So I contacted the seller and shipped the faulty device back to kolkata. They informed Pipo guys in China and my brand new replacement device was on the way to India directly from factory. It took around 8 days to reach Bangalore. This time I got free leather cover as gift and two Screen Guard in package. :)
Summary
Overall It was a great experience buying a Pipo tablet with some glitches. I am happy with device specs and it's capabilities.
I did few experiments with device like installing debian linux, rooting and using it for coding. I'll post these stuff soon.
